Rank Advancements

A boy may be a scout without advancing, but may miss out on the value of the experience. The Eagle Scout award is the highest rank in scouting. The Eagle Scout award requires that other ranks must be earned first and in order: Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, and Life. The goals of the ranks include learning and performing new skills, outdoor and camping activities, teaching skills, community service, and leadership responsibilities. The Eagle rank and some of its prerequisite ranks also need merit badges earned — some are elective and some are required. Merit badges are awards for learning about and accomplishing tasks in specific topics, such as Chemistry, Cinematography, Citizenship in the Community, and Motorboating. Merit badges are introduced in Chapter [Merit Badges].

Note: this book doesn't list the specific requirements for the many ranks and awards. Please see the official up-to-date Handbook, Requirements, and Merit Badge books for the exact requirements.
