Ranks

The Scouting ranks are used to evaluate the boy's progress in scouting and are used to highlight and honor his accomplishments. The Boy Scout Handbook has many pages covering the rank requirements. Note this book does not include all the requirements (and they may have changed). Be sure to follow the recent Handbook or Requirements book for full details. The following sections introduce each of the ranks leading up to Eagle.

Tenderfoot

The Tenderfoot rank requirements include campout preparation, pitching a tent, camping overnight, knot tying and rope care, flag presentation, and first aid and safety skills. It also includes documenting and improving in some fitness exercises. No merit badges are required for the Tenderfoot rank. Tenderfoot doesn't have a time requirement — a new scout can earn this as fast as he can do all the requirements.

Second Class

No merit badges are required for the Second Class rank. Also there is no specific time requirement, but note that the required activities may take a couple months — two overnight campouts are required.

First Class

No merit badges are required for the First Class rank. As for the Second Class rank, there is no specific time requirement to earn the First Class, but note that the required activities may take a few months. The campouts and patrol activities done since joining Boy Scouts can be used towards the First Class activity requirement.

Star

The Star rank has time and merit badge requirements. The scout needs to actively serve in a position of responsibility for four months after earning the First Class. The scout needs to earn any four Eagle-required merit badges and two additional merit badges. The scout also does at least six hours of service projects -- this needs to be approved by the Scoutmaster before starting.

Life

The Life rank requires six months of actively serving in a position of responsibility (after earning the Star rank), five more merit badges (three from the Eagle-required list), and participate in six more hours of Scoutmaster-approved service projects.

Eagle

The Eagle rank requires six months of actively serving in a position of responsibility as a Life scout and ten more merit badges of which five are from the Eagle-required list (for a minimum of 21 earned).

The main task of the Eagle rank is planning and leading a service project that benefits a non-profit organization other than Boy Scouting.

For details specifically for the Eagle rank, see Chapter [Earning the Eagle].
