Merit Badge Counselors

Scouts work with merit badge counselors to complete badge requirements. Merit badge counselors are adult hobbyists or professionals who have volunteered to offer their time and expertise to help scouts learn more about a specific topic. By working with an adult on a merit badge, a scout can experience personal growth and gain confidence.

Members of the community who register with Boy Scouts of America and complete BSA Youth Protection training can be a counselor. Registration for merit badge counselors is handled by the local council or district. A list of registered counselors in your area is supplied to troop leaders. Troops may also maintain their own merit badge counselors list or have a coordinator who recruits counselors for various merit badges. In some cases, the Scoutmaster, other adult leaders, or parents in the troop may be counselors (also if registered properly as a counselor).

There is no requirement on how many different counselors the scout must use. The scout can talk to his Scoutmaster to discuss that if it is a concern. It is common for a scout to have a few merit badges signed off by the same counselor.
