First Steps
The following are suggestions for tasks to do when getting started with Scouts.
First Steps for the Boy
- Meet the Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster(s).
- Turn in the application and pay registration fees, if required.
- Find out what Patrol the boy is a member of.
- Meet the youth leaders, such as Senior Patrol Leader and Patrol Leader(s).
- Obtain a Boy Scout uniform with proper patches and accessories.
- Obtain the Boy Scout Handbook.
- Make a notebook or file folder to keep track of advancements.
- Make or obtain a calendar or schedule for upcoming activities and attend the meetings and events.
- Complete the requirements for the Scout badge.
- Review the requirements and plan for the achievements of the Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class ranks.
- Review the list of Eagle-required merit badges.
First Steps for the Parent
- Meet the Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster(s).
- Make sure the boy's application is turned in and registration fees are paid (if required).
- Find out what Patrol your boy is a member of.
- Find out who the youth leaders are, such as Senior Patrol Leader and Patrol Leader(s).
- Obtain a Boy Scout uniform with proper patches and accessories for the boy.
- Obtain a Boy Scout Handbook for the boy.
- Read and discuss ``How to Protect Your Children from Child Abuse: A Parent's Guide'' pamphlet with your boy.
- Help make a notebook or file folder to keep track of advancements.
- Make or obtain a calendar or schedule for upcoming activities.
- Encourage the boy to quickly complete the Scout badge requirements.
- Review the requirements and check that the boy has a plan for the achievements of the Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class ranks.
- Review the list of Eagle-required merit badges.
- Find out about parent volunteering opportunities and attend scout committee meetings.
First Steps for the Adult Volunteer Leader
- Meet the Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster(s), and Committee Chairman.
- Take the Youth Protection Training.
- Turn in the Adult Application and pay the registration fee.
- Find out who the youth leaders are, such as Senior Patrol Leader and Patrol Leader(s).
- Obtain a Boy Scout uniform with proper patches and accessories for the adult leader.
- Make or obtain a calendar or schedule for upcoming activities.
- Review and learn the basic requirements for the scouting ranks.
- Review the list of Eagle-required merit badges.
- Attend local Roundtable meetings.
- Attend local training opportunities.
Troops may have other steps in getting started, such as: taking a photo, turning in medical form, paying summer camp deposit, completing troop resource survey and other information forms, troop software registration, and joining mailing lists. Troops may also provide a welcome notebook, parent's guide, troop handbook, hat, neckerchief, and/or a custom t-shirt. They may also expect parents to be involved as chaperones or drivers.
