Cub Scouts

Cub Scouting is for younger boys, usually aged 7 to 11 years old. Cub Scouts is part of Boy Scouts of America, but has different organization, different leadership, different goals, and different achievements. Its program helps prepare boys for a more successful experience as a future Boy Scout. Cub Scouts in the oldest program — Webelos — may wear a Boy Scout uniform with blue shoulder loops and their Cub Scout patches. The Webelos badge introduces several of the requirements of the first Boy Scout badge.

A Cub Scout graduates into Boy Scouting when he is 11 years old or at least 10 years old and has completed 5th grade or earned the Arrow of Light (the highest rank in Cub Scouting). While the Cub Scout den and pack are led by adult leaders, Boy Scout patrol and troop meetings are planned and led by the youth, with adult supervision and guidance. Boy Scouting provides the older boy with more experience outside of the home and neighborhood (including overnight hikes and advanced camping adventures), greater responsibility for planning activities, developing more self-reliance, and learning democracy for making group decisions.

Another significant difference between younger Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts is that parents generally do not sign off any achievement or rank advancement requirements in Boy Scouts.

Boy Scouts can participate in Cub Scouting by serving as a Den Chief or working at Cub Scout day camps.

This book does not cover Cub Scouting in further detail.
