Character References
The Eagle rank requires character references. The boy needs to supply multiple names of those who will provide a recommendation. These should be people the boy personally knows. These may be parents, religious leaders, coaches, teachers, school guidance counselors, and employers for example. The application has room for six references with address, telephone, and email. (It is understood that some scouts do not have a religious affiliation or may not have had an employer.) The scout should ask the references first before providing their details.
Ask your unit or council if they have an Eagle Scout Reference Form that they would like the scout to use. Some have the scouts provide a form and a pre-addressed stamped envelope to gather a confidential response. This response is sent to the council or district and not to the scout.
This is generally a casual or formal letter recommending the boy as an Eagle Scout. It may address his integrity and character traits that make him suitable as an Eagle. It may share examples as known by the adult illustrating the boy's qualifications.
