Scout Books
In addition to the uniform, the scout should have his own official Boy Scout Handbook. Normally this would not be a used edition since it has checklists and up-to-date requirements that will be dated and signed. The handbook provides a plethora of information teaching many outdoor skills, citizenship, and other scouting standards. It often provides explanations and background on many of the scouting rank requirements. The BSA provides the book in both ring bound and perfect binding editions. Some scouts use a book sleeve or jacket to protect their handbook which may be taken on many activities. Scoutmasters often encourage scouts to bring their books to meetings so requirements can be signed off in it — or so its information can be compared with the troop's official charts.
Additional books include the Boy Scout Requirements book (covers requirements for ranks, merit badges, and other special opportunities), merit badge books, and handbooks for various youth leadership positions.
