Introduction

Hiking, camping, helping grandmothers cross the street, service projects, uniforms, doing a good turn daily, and being prepared. These are all common examples of Boy Scouting.

Boy Scouts are members of a scouting organization — for this book -- the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). This program is for boys who are 11 years old to 18 years old — or beginning at 10 years old for boys who have earned the Cub Scout Arrow of Light award or have completed the fifth grade. Boy Scouts of America also encompasses the Tiger Cubs and Cub Scout programs for younger boys, Varsity, and Venturing which also includes co-ed young adults. (This book doesn't cover these younger or older scouting programs.)

Scouting emphasizes outdoor activities, camping, physical fitness, lifelong learning, trying new skills, safety, service, responsibility, and leadership. According to the Boy Scouts of America website, it ``provides a program for young people that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and develops personal fitness.''

Boy Scout units are organized into a large group of boys known as a troop. An individual troop is made of one or more smaller youth-led patrols.

The official mission statement of the Boy Scouts of America is: ``to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.'' The official vision statement is: ``The Boy Scouts of America will prepare every eligible youth in America to become a responsible, participating citizen and leader who is guided by the Scout Oath and Law.''
