Buying a Scout Uniform
The family of each scout is responsible for the cost of his uniform. Often boys are encouraged to earn their own uniform. After the initial investment has been made, most boys are able to wear their uniform for several years. Many troops maintain a uniform bank that consists of uniforms that scouts have outgrown. When the cost of a scout uniform is a hardship and no secondhand uniforms are available, the troop, local council, or charter organization should be able to help purchase a scout's uniform or help him earn the money for a uniform.
Many units will allow the use of non-BSA branded pants and shorts so long as they are the appropriate color and not from military uniforms. Camouflage is absolutely prohibited.
The cost of a basic Boy Scout uniform, including shirt, convertible pants, belt, socks, hat and insignia, is currently about $110 - $130.
It is important to note that uniforms sometimes get damaged — they may get ripped, stained, or permanently soiled during outdoor or sporting events. You may want to encourage the use of lower-cost Activity Uniforms for active or dirty events.
